In the formula, n is called voltage ratio (winding ratio). When n<1, N1 >n2, V1>V2, the transformer is a step-down transformer; otherwise, it is a step-up transformer.

At the rated power, the ratio of the output power of the transformer to the input power is called the efficiency of the transformer, i.e

When the output power of the transformer P1 P2 is equal to the input power, efficiency Ʒ equal to 100%, the transformer will not cause any loss. But in fact this kind of transformer is not. The power transmission transformer always produces loss, the loss is mainly with copper loss and iron loss.

Copper loss refers to the loss caused by the coil resistance of a transformer. When the current passes through the coil resistance to generate heat, part of the electrical energy is converted to heat energy and loss.

Transformer iron losses include two aspects. One is the magnetic hysteresis loss, when the alternating current through the transformer, through the transformer silicon steel sheet size and direction of the magnetic field lines of the change, makes the internal molecular friction between silicon steel sheet and emit heat, thus loss part of electricity, this is hysteresis losses. The other is the eddy current loss, when the transformer is working. Has magnetic field lines through the core, in a plane perpendicular to the magnetic field lines can produce induced current, due to the current form a closed circuit circulation formation, and into spiral shape, so called vortex. The existence of the vortex core heating, energy consumption, this loss is called eddy current loss.

The efficiency of a transformer is closely related to the power level of the transformer. Generally, the higher the power is, the smaller the loss and output power will be, and the higher the efficiency will be.
